Betty Walden November 9, 1955 – March 2, 2026

Betty Walden, 70, of Merritt Island, Florida, passed away on March 2, 2026, after a courageous battle with illness. A beloved teacher, coach, librarian, photographer, devoted spouse, mother, and grandmother, Betty lived every day with a sense of wonder and an open heart.

Betty spent the majority of her life rooted in Merritt Island, Florida, the community she called home. She dedicated 35 years to education, spending most of her career at Merritt Island High School, where she taught high school biology and coached volleyball. She had a gift for igniting curiosity in her students and a quiet fierceness on the volleyball court that inspired those she coached.

In retirement, Betty found a second home at the local library, where she poured her energy into instilling a love of lifelong learning in others. She also discovered a deep passion for photography, spending her days capturing the beauty of dogs, wildlife, and the natural world around her. Whether she had a camera in hand or was simply standing still to watch a bird take flight, Betty noticed what others walked past.

A true free spirit, Betty was never happier than when she was outside or exploring somewhere new. An avid traveler, she journeyed far and wide, from domestic adventures to international destinations. She approached every trip and every day with the belief that life is an adventure. She stopped to smell the roses, appreciated the small things, and had a boundless love for animals, evident to everyone who knew her, from the wildlife she photographed to her beloved dog, Otto, who was her faithful companion.

Betty was a deeply spiritual person. She felt most connected to something greater when she was outdoors, beneath an open sky, or watching the light change over water. The earth was sacred to her, and she carried a genuine commitment to protecting it for the generations that would follow. She made a lasting impression on everyone she met through her kindness and a laugh that no one who heard it could ever forget.

Betty is survived by her husband, Jim Walden, whom she met at the local YMCA, she on the tennis courts and he on the basketball court, a love story as fitting as it was enduring. She is also survived by her daughter Megan Roberts (and son-in-law Ross Roberts); her daughter Riley Walden; her grandchildren Quinn and Graham, who knew her as their beloved Mimi; and her grand dogs Lilly, Charlotte, and Simon, whom she adored as only Betty could. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Ronnie Grosh.
