Charles Ernest Hayes, affectionately known to many as "Papa," passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was 86 years old. Born on June 20, 1939, in Pittston, Pennsylvania, Charles was the only child of Ernest Hayes and Ruth Tench Hayes.

A longtime man of faith, Charles was a devoted member of Merritt Island Presbyterian Church, where he worshipped and served faithfully since 1979. Coaching his children and later his grandchildren was one of his greatest joys. He was their mentor, cheerleader, and steady guide, creating memories that will be treasured for generations. In the community, he was fondly remembered as the gentleman who loved visiting local restaurants and handing out gold dollar coins in memory of his loving wife, Donna — a small act of kindness that became a signature part of who he was.

Charles is survived by his three children: Tyler (Ben) Ross, Carter (Jessica) Hayes, and Christa (Marty) Casleton; eight grandchildren – Amber (Michael) Gentile, Zachary Ross, Sam (Alaina) Ross, Isaac Ross, Marik Casleton, Maci (Nicholas) Lewis, Carter Hayes, and Cameron Hayes; and three great‑grandchildren – Matthias, Ember, and Carter – all of whom brought immense joy and pride to his life. Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Donna; his parents; his son, Charles Ernest Hayes II; and his granddaughter, Makayla Casleton.

A private ceremony will be held by the family to honor Charles's life and legacy.
