Obituary

Christopher Muthig, age 68, of Melbourne, Florida, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2026 at Harborview HealthCare Center. He was under the care of the staff at Harborview HCC for the past four years, and most recently, St. Francis Hospice, before passing due to a long-term illness. He was well liked and will be missed by many of the staff, fellow residents and friends. Chris had resided in Florida for the past 20 years.

Chris was born on August 3, 1957, in Waterbury, CT to the late Thomas Joseph Muthig and the late Josephine "Joan" (Cosgrove) Muthig. He was raised in Connecticut, and graduated from Pomperaug Regional High School in Southbury, CT. He worked primarily in masonry, carpentry, and car sales, in which he excelled. He loved fitting people in the right car and was a star at selling when others couldn't close the deal.

A lifelong avid sports fan, Chris particularly loved the New York Knicks, Yankees, and Dallas Cowboys, and could talk about his teams with great expertise to whoever would listen. Growing up, he played basketball, baseball, and football. He was a basketball junkie, and some of his siblings' fondest memories are of having one-on-one basketball battles with him. They recall his sister and her friends having to step out of the way to avoid getting knocked over as he practiced his jump shot at every doorway while enthusiastically yelling, "Hoops!"

Chris loved the ocean, swimming, and sunshine. In his early years, his first visits to the "shore" were to his paternal grandparents' home in New Jersey. In the summer, this meant trips to the beach with big waves! In his later years, it was the Florida beaches, and he was known to say that the Atlantic was his swimming pool. He loved music as well, and would share his favorite songs until everyone was tired of hearing them. Chris was a non-stop storyteller, especially funny stories sharing laughs from when he, family, and friends were younger. He loved his family and friends; his connection to them was a heartfelt part of who he was.

Chris was predeceased by his parents, his brother-in-law Dave DePuy, numerous aunts and uncles, and his beloved cousins Randy Nutbrown, Patty O'Neill Radke, Penny Shepard Pino, and Joe O'Neill. Chris is survived by his sister Joan "Missy" DePuy, his three brothers: Tommy (Joyce), Jimmy (Sharon), Steven (Kath) and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held June 12, 2026 at 10:00 am at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Prospect, CT. Immediately following, his ashes will be to laid to rest with his parents at Pine Grove Cemetery, 850 Meriden Rd, Waterbury, CT. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Chris' memory to a mental health organization or any charity of your choice.

As Chris was known to say, "Peace Out!"
