Obituary

Donald "Don" Fitzgerald 1931–2025

Donald "Don" Fitzgerald, 94, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2025, leaving behind a legacy defined by curiosity, craftsmanship, service, and a deep love of family and adventure.

Born November 19, 1931 to Lynn Fitzgerald and Dorothea Fessenden, Don was raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he attended local schools and developed the thoughtful, inquisitive nature that would guide his life. He went on to earn his doctorate in psychology and built a long, meaningful career as a clinical psychologist with the Veterans Administration, dedicating himself to supporting the wellbeing of veterans with compassion and quiet strength.

A gifted builder and lifelong creator, Don designed and constructed numerous projects over the years—including his own boats and his family home. Whether he was sketching an idea, reading a new book, or carving a piece of wood in his workshop, Don always had something in motion.

Don married Audrey Campbell, and together they welcomed two children, Carrie and Brian. Later, Don married Diane Williams, and together they raised twins Kelly and Karen, creating a blended family grounded in love and resilience. Don was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Trey, Jakobe, Michael, Matthew, Olivia, and Niko, each of whom brought him immense joy.

In retirement, Don and Diane embraced a life of adventure. They spent 12 unforgettable years sailing the East Coast and the Caribbean, followed by six years traveling across the United States and Canada in an RV, collecting stories, friendships, and memories that defined their later years together.

Don will be remembered as an avid reader, a talented woodcarver, a patient builder, and a man who never stopped learning or creating. His gentle spirit, steady wisdom, and unwavering curiosity enriched every life he touched. He is survived by his wife, Diane; his children, Carrie (Paul Bielski), Brian (Ann Fitzgerald), Kelly (Dan Albert), and Karen (Marko Punda); his six grandchildren; and all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Don's life was full, adventurous, and beautifully lived. His family honors him with gratitude for the love he gave and the legacy he leaves behind. Fair winds and following seas, Don. Your journey was a beautiful one
