Obituary

John Idone, age 88, of Merritt Island, Florida, passed away on November 23, 2023. He was born on February 8, 1935, in Torre Faro, Messina, Italy. John was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, coach, mentor, aviator, and proud owner of many German Shepherds throughout his life. John's journey began in Sicily during the escalation of World War II, where he witnessed the planes flying overhead while playing soccer on the beach. Inspired, he pursued his dream of flying for the US Air Force. After immigrating to the United States with his mother and older brother, John resided in Brooklyn and attended Aviation High School in Queens. Graduating with honors, he immediately enlisted in basic training for the Air Force. After serving for several years, he returned to Brooklyn to attend college. It was during this time, he accepted a commission as a cadet for the Air Force and began his career as a navigator with several fighter squadrons. During his distinguished military career, John served in the US Air Force from 1953 to 1979. He served as a navigator on the F4 Phantom aircraft and played a vital role in various deployments, including Korea, and providing on-call support during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Despite the challenges of wartime, John cherished the camaraderie among his squadron and the memorable pranks they played during their downtime. In 1980, John's laughter captured the heart of Barbara (Rosicka) Idone, and they embarked on a loving journey together as husband and wife. John's legacy lives on through his two children, Jason Idone and Mary Catherine (Idone) McLellan. As a dedicated soccer coach for Jason's team and an Odyssey of the Mind coach for Mary Catherine's team, John instilled the values of hard work, sportsmanship, and the importance of enjoying life to the fullest. John's infectious laughter, love for Elvis songs, admiration for the roar of jets in the sky, and affection for German Shepherd dogs as well as rescue cats will forever be cherished by his family and friends. He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara, his children, Jason and Mary Catherine, his grandchildren, Bella, Gavin, Angela, and John, as well as his brothers, Salvatore and Paul and many nieces and nephews. John Idone's passing leaves a void in our hearts, but his memory will continue to inspire us to make every moment count. His dedication to service, love for his family, and zest for life will always be remembered.
