Obituary

Virginia Dare Henderson, born on March 22, 1942, in the charming city of Savannah, Georgia, passed away peacefully from natural causes on August 18, 2026. A beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Viriginia's life was a testament to love, kindness, and family.

Born to Virginia and Clary Martin, Virginia was a cherished daughter, sister to Mary Jane Shuman (Leiston) and Buddy Martin (whom she welcomed to their eternal home on August 26, 2026), and a devoted wife to her late husband Eugene A. Henderson.

"Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my words and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life" John 5:24

Married in her hometown of Savannah on June 4, 1960, Virginia and Gene shared a beautiful journey, nurturing a family that became her pride and joy. Together they raised three wonderful children: Allen (Jody), Jeff (Heather) and Deleah Arnold (Joey) fostering a home filled with warmth and laughter.

Virginia's legacy extends through her adored grandchildren Patrick (Danielle), Christina Garcia, Ryan, Holly Mahony and Sophia, and further into the lives of her great-grandchildren, Emily, Sean, Collin, Alexander, and Jones, nephew Les Shuman and nieces Allison Bledsoe, Amy Pinckney, Melody Norwood and Sally Anne Giles. Her family was the centerpiece of her world, and she relished every moment spent with them, especially during the festive Christmas season. Virginia had a particular fondness for Christmas, embracing the holiday's spirit with her love for decorations, the bustling shopping season, and most importantly, the cherished gatherings on Christmas Day.

Her radiant kindness, an attribute that brought smiles to many faces, was perhaps one of her most defining characteristics. Virginia had an innate ability to warm hearts with her gentle ways and was truly one of a kind. Her compassion and generosity left a lasting imprint on all her knew her.

Virginia spent her life doing what she loved the most. First and foremost, she was an incredibly talented artist, whether it was pastel stills of fruit or a beautiful painting of her grandmother's house, she had a natural ability to put the beauty of the world around her on canvas. She opened a decoration and Christmas shop, Virginia Dare, with her sister Mary Jane. She decorated houses at Christmas time, catered weddings and made beautiful flower arrangements. She later added to her journey and became a Senior Living Activities Director at Savannah Commons and the Habersham House where she touched so many lives.

Virginia was predeceased by her parents and her beloved husband. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her sister Mary Jane, all of whom carry forward her legacy of love and unity.

A service to honor Virginia's remarkable life will be held on October 3, 2026 at 11:00 am. First Christian Church of Savannah, 711 E Victory Drive, Savannah, GA 31405.
