Obituary

William Howard Burnett, lovingly known as Bill, passed away on April 22, 2026, at the age of 82.

Born on March 13, 1944, to Margaret "Peggy" Gallagher and St. Clair Burnett, Bill's life was also deeply shaped by his stepfather, Clarence "Goody" Goodwin, who played an important and loving role throughout his life. Bill lived a life defined by service, storytelling, loyalty, and love for his family. To his children, he was more than a father — he was our childhood hero. The one who made ordinary moments unforgettable, whose stories could captivate a room no matter how many times you had heard them before. His Irish spirit shined brightly through his gift for storytelling.

Bill was deeply proud of his service to this country, and that pride never faded. He served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1968, achieving the rank of Sergeant. His commitment to veterans and military service continued long after his years in uniform. He was an active and devoted member of the American Legion, eventually serving as the Department of New York Commander from 2007-2008 — an accomplishment that reflected both his leadership and unwavering dedication to fellow veterans.

An avid reader, Bill loved books almost as much as he loved sharing stories. If you knew him, you likely walked away with a memorable tale, a laugh, or a feeling that you had truly been seen and welcomed. Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Laura Burnett; his daughter, Kelly (Burnett) MacDonell and her partner Todd Watkins; and his son, Scott W. Burnett and his wife Jennifer Johnson Burnett, his stepdaughter, Julie (Whitesell) Henke and her husband David Henke; and his stepson, Larry Whitesell and his wife Vivian. He was also a proud grandfather and great-grandfather to Ashley, Andrea, Carter, Austyn, and Emersyn. He also leaves behind many extended family members, friends, fellow veterans, and all those whose lives were better because they knew him.

A committal service with military honors will be held at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery in Mims, FL. on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. This will be followed by a Celebration of Life service at the clubhouse of the community where he lived, at 119 Lost Lake Drive, Cocoa, FL. 32926, from 1pm-4pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Legion Children & Youth Programs. Though our hearts are broken, we are endlessly grateful for the years, stories, laughter, and love we shared with him. His memory will live on in every great story told around a table, every act of service, and every toast raised in his honor.
